Satellites Suggest Rising Tropical High Cloud Altitude: 2002–2021

چکیده
Tropical upper-troposphere clouds are expected to rise under global warming, contributing a positive radiative feedback. Here we show that Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) retrievals over 2002–2021 from the Terra and Aqua satellites report tropical-mean high-cloud altitude increase of 6.9 ± 2.7 m yr−1 (±2σ), while atmospheric models 5.6 3.0 1979–2014. During their common overlap period, however, observed trend is greater than models. The also tropically confined cloud-height response El Nino, whereas cloud height peak extends into subtropics. Poleward mid-latitudes, MODIS have drifts relative each other, highlighting need for deeper investigation potential time-dependent biases in retrievals. Both sensors significant tropical increases since 2002, which statistically consistent with those simulated by climate

Orbital evolution of high-altitude balloon satellites
We investigate the motion of artificial satellites with large area-to-mass ratios in high-altitude low inclined orbits, perturbed simultaneously by solar radiation pressure andEarth’s oblateness. Our study is based on recent theoretical advances in circumplanetary dust dynamics (Hamilton & Krivov 1996). Applying these methods to the motion of balloon satellites, we write down and analyze the or...
متن کاملNavigation with High-Altitude Satellites: A Study of Ranging Errors
In order to determine the position of a receiver on earth to within a fraction of a mile using high-altitude satellites, 10-meter accuracy in the receiver-satellite ranges or range differences is necessary. The factors that affect ranging systems attempting to achieve such accuracies are considered here rather than the detailed design of a ranging system. It is concluded that the effects of mul...

The Third International Workshop on High-Resolution and Cloud Modeling: Tropical Cyclones and Climate was held at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa from December 2 to 4, 2008. The workshop assessed the current status of highresolution atmospheric models, with a focus on the simulation of tropical cyclones and the connection of tropical cyclones to climate variability and change. Key issues con...
متن کاملCerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis Masquerading as High Altitude Cerebral Edema at Extreme Altitude
Introduction: Extreme altitude travel has gained popularity globally for adventurous, scientific, and military endeavors. Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) at extreme altitude is a rare, covert, and emergent condition requiring immediate intervention. Case Presentation: A case of CVST masqueraded as high altitude cerebral edema (HACE) at 6700 m/22000 ft i...
متن کاملUse of ancient sedimentary DNA as a novel conservation tool for high-altitude tropical biodiversity.
Conservation of biodiversity may in the future increasingly depend upon the availability of scientific information to set suitable restoration targets. In traditional paleoecology, sediment-based pollen provides a means to define preanthropogenic impact conditions, but problems in establishing the exact provenance and ecologically meaningful levels of taxonomic resolution of the evidence are li...
